Early Tver Painting is one of the least known pages in the history of Russian medieval art. Despite the fact that only a small number of Tver icons survive, recent research by Sovjet art historians gives grounds to believe that an independent Tver school of iconpainting with clearly expressed features of its own which distinguish it from the Novgorod, Moscow, Pskov and other schools of art in Ancient Rus existed in the 13th-16th centuries.

The authors of this book trace the history of Tver icon painting, analyse its artistic methods, and describe the most prominent specimens.
