The Journals of Denton Welch are an intimate autobiographical journey through the last years of the English writer whose rediscovery has been heralded by such diverse admirers as Barbara Pym and William Burroughs. Writers during a long period of infirmity following a bicycle accident -which caused an injury that eventually proved fatal- these journals are witty, revealing, often funny or frankly homoerotic, sometimes self-absorbed and other times full of gossip about the author's celebrated literary friends (the Sitwells, Vita Sackville-West, and others). Several of his fellow writers felt the journal to be Welch's finest work, and only now has the climate been right for its unexpurgated publication.- E.P. Dutton.
