The Llangollen ladies - M. Gordon

Lady Butler and Miss Ponsonby were certainly an odd pair. Born to noble Irish families in the mid Eighteenth Century, they departed in 1778 - flew away like wild geese - to Wales where they settled together in a three-bay stone-built cottage in Llangollen which they re-named Plas Newydd ('the New Mansion').
Professedly living in retirement from the world, they moved in local society, received successions of distinguished visitors, espoused eccentricity, and made it their business to become a legend in their lifetime.
They transformed their house, adding a Gothic library and much else. The porch and door are a riot of fragments, and the tiny entrance hall and the staircase are indescribably encrusted. So too is the Oak Room, with its Spanish leather, dated 1814 above the fireplace. They installed a great deal of stained glass. They had a mania for collecting carved oak.
The grand house, Plas Newydd, is in a fine state of preservation, care of the County Council, and is well worth exploring, inside and out. It stands in memory of two of the most peculiar and interesting people ever to be part of the long and varied history of North Wales.
