They were a weird assortment of craft coming in all shapes and sizes; they were unnamed and known only by numbers; they were scorned as "tin cans', "Noah's arks' and "those bloody kipper boxes". Yet they were probably the most remarkable fleet that ever put tot sea.

By 1944, over 100,000 officers and men were operating a vast fleet of flat-bottemed craft that varied from boats carrying 25 troops to those carrying 250, from ammunition carriers to floating hospitals to tank carriers capable of firing over 1000 rockets at a time.
