Sulawesi is one of the most poorly-known regions of Indonesia and wise environmental management, including the proper assessment of environmental impact arising from development projects and other activities, is currentlyvery difficult. A major reason for this is a general lack of information, but the problem is compounded because much of the available literature is scattered through a widerange of Dutch, English, German and Indonesian journals, reports and books.

The Ecology of Sulawesi, produced in both English and Indonesian versions, has brought together information from over 1600 sources as well as from research conducted specifically for the book. It is hoped that it will prove useful to resource managers, ecologists, environmental scientists and local gouvernement personal, and be enlightening to Sulawesi's inhabitants and visitors.
