The Gospels of Tsar Ivan Alexander is an outstanding treasure of the cultural and spiritual Renaissance in 14th-century Bulgaria, and a masterpiece of Byzantine manuscript art. It was not only the supreme achievement of Bulgarian medieval culture, but also marked its final flourishing shortly before the collapse of Bulgaria under the invasion of the Ottoman Turks.
